As one of life’s quirky couples, our passion is to explore the world, three random bus rides at a time. We love nothing more than getting lost in the middle of nowhere, discovering hidden gems, and of course, meeting some weird and wonderful characters along the way!
our story
I’m Stewart and with instructions from the boss (Jiwon), it’s my pleasure to share our novel little story with you. It all started around nine years ago via the CouchSurfing website. As is the case with most love stories, she messaged me at 2 AM with a frank invite to a grilled pork belly joint, and I asked her if she always reaches out to strange foreign men in the early hours with offerings of Korean meat. That’s right young ones, in the days before Tinder we all hooked up with pork talk and slept on one another’s couches…
Anyhow, we ended up messaging each other for weeks before finally meeting in person at a language exchange in Seoul and crying into one another’s arms at a Starbucks soon after. As I recall, Jiwon arrived late that night and to be fair, not a lot has changed ever since!
I was volunteering at a fire station in Seocho-gu at the time while Jiwon moonlighted around the city doing yoga and teaching English on the side. We eventually moved into Jiwon’s box room flat together and slept on the floor inside of a rickety mosquito tent. We then applied to a Master’s program together in Finland, spent two magical years in the beautiful city of Oulu, and went on a spontaneous jaunt to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan somewhere in between.
After city-slicking in Seoul for a year, trying out some digital nomadism across Eastern Europe, and relocating to the UK during my mother’s terminal illness, we finally “settled down” close to Jiwon’s roots in the deep south of South Korea. Having endured everything life could possibly throw at us, we remain best friends, partners, and lifelong travel buddies to this day.
three rides to nowhere
We traveled extensively in our younger days. Whether frequenting doll house pensions in the countryside or roaming around department stories in matching Snoopy pajamas, we did it all thanks to a fun game we coined called Three Rides to Nowhere.
The rules are simple:
- Dash off to a random bus stop and play a game of rock, scissors, paper.
- The winner picks a number between 5 and 20, at which point to ride the next bus that rolls in for said amount of stops.
- Hop off, explore the local area a little and repeat two more times.
- Chances are, you’ll be in the middle of nowhere when you get off the third bus. Catch your breath, embrace the spontaneity of it all and let the wanderlust guide the way!
